. In one of the most memorable football games in Southern Arizona history, in front of thousands of fans who forced a sellout 30 minutes before kickoff, Scurran made a believer of everyone by using sound fundamentals, a compact strategy, and no turnovers to orchestrate the upset.
At the end of the 2004 season, Scurran’s Pima Storm was invited to be the “victim” of national powerhouse, Kilgore College of Texas, in the Pilgrim’s Pride Bowl Classic in Mt. Pleasant, Texas…and on national television. Again, defying all predictions and reasonable logic, they played possession football for 3 quarters before opening up the offense and scoring to win, 10-7 at the game’s end. They earned a Top 5 National ranking in only the school’s 4th year of existence.
A reporter for ESPN who covered the game wrote an article titled, “It’s All About Attitude”, a quote he heard Scurran say to his team on the sideline during a TV timeout, still trailing late in the game.
The American Football Quarterly magazine named him as “one of the nation’s top coaching prospects” for the next decade.
Scurran has been State Coach-of-the-Year 5 times and 15 times at the District/Local level. During his career, Coach Scurran has also coached Track and Field, Alpine Skiing, Tennis, and Basketball. His teams have won championships in each of these sports.
He has spoken in over 900 high schools throughout the nation on Athletic Development, Championship Decision Making, and Motivation. Also, he has been a featured clinician at over 100 university and nationally sponsored “Coaching Clinics” on various elements of strategy and athletic preparation. In any sport, Coach Scurran’s teams always excel in winning, both on and in life.
